When relaxing at home, one of my favourite things to do is indulge in comfort food and comfort drinks. While it may not always be possible to cook while you're trying to relax, I have included some quick and easy fixes and some recipes that can be kept frozen until you need them...If you're interested in learning more on how psychology affects our selection of comfort food, make sure to read
psychological articles on food.
You can also enroll in cooking classes. Who doesn't want to learn how to cook new recipes? If not for you, do it for your family! I'm sure they love Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Greek or whatever other food that you would like to try out at home.
Quick and Easy Comfort Food
Depending on your mood (and perhaps diet... check out
this cool link on healthy eating and diets
if you're following or thinking of following a diet), sometimes satisfying a little craving will provide enough satisfaction to allow your mind to relax a little. Here are my suggestions:
For the creamy and sweet craving, I recommend instant pudding. You can easily hide a few boxes in your pantry, and the only other ingredient required is milk. I'm not a big milk drinker, but I always have powered milk on hand. It only takes 2 minutes to prepare and you should let it sit for about 5 minutes to achieve good consistency. Enjoy...
For a whole body hug, I recommend chicken soup. Once again, you can keep a few packets in your pantry. Boil water and mix until the noodles are cooked. It's also great if you feel like you're coming down with the flu.
To improve my mood when I feel a little blue, I always have a pint of sugar-free, low in fat, vanilla ice cream in my freezer. While the taste might not be as good as the sinful, "full on" ice cream, I will be able to pull away from the pint before I finish it... And if I can't pull away, then my hips should forgive me.
Frozen and Ready When You Need It
My all time favourite has to be
Won Ton Soup.
Although some might not consider it "real" comfort food, it makes me relax and I feel better all over without over eating.
I think my next one might be a favourite for a lot of you... Or at least it was for Garfield:
lasagna.
Comfort Drinks
While I do not suggest that you go on a binge when you get depressed, one glass of red wine can do wonders when you try to unwind at the end of the day. Similarly, a cool beer in the summer might help alleviate some stress when the day is over.
My favourite supplier is the company with the advertisement just left of this paragraph. They have a large selection of teas, which include some great tea starter kits and amazingly cool tea pots. I recommend them for all new and old tea lovers, and even for those who have yet to discover the benefits of tea. Go ahead and check them out for yourself.!
You'll be surprised to see how affordable their products are! Now comfort food and drinks do not have to make you feel guilty...
