My pick for January 2007 is Judge and Jury by James Patterson and Andrew Gross. It's a legal thriller whose main character is FBI agent Nick Pellisante. Pellisante is a strong and highly believable lead character who quickly pulls you into his world and his obsession with bringing Dominic Cavello (a Mafia big shot) to justice. Cavello being such an important and powerful man in the Mafia, he manages to intimidate the justice system. James Patterson and Andrew Gross's work is splendid as usual. They create such a vivid image of the Mafia world and its villains. It contains the ideal mix of action and legal proceedings and this book keeps you wanting more. I strongly recommend it to all thriller lovers. |
My non-fiction pick for January 2007 is Simple Steps by Lisa Lelas, Linda McClintock and Beverly Zingarella. These three women created 40 simple steps to improve your health, weight, home and spirit. In the spirit of keeping my new year's resolutions, I grabbed this book and started reading. I couldn't put it down. These women are simply brilliant. No, they're not rocket scientists, they're just regular women who put their lives in order and created 40 Simple Steps. We all need to work towards becoming a better person, but this book breaks it down into small, achievable tasks. In order to succeed with this plan, you will need to focus on 4 items during the first week. Most items are daily tasks such as taking a walk, but also include weekly or monthly tasks. Once the week is over, you add 4 more tasks and keep building on your new habits. |
All in all, I loved the simplicity of the book. Not only does it explain why each one of these tasks is important, but it also includes suggestions on how to include these tasks in your life. Should I mention that Oprah recommends the Simple Steps? It's definitely worth a read!
