This month's fiction book of the month recommendation is a Y2K bug story by R.J. Pineiro... I know, the end of the millennium was more than a decade ago, but this story involves a global computer virus, Mayan culture, Russian spies and possible alien life. Quite an interesting mix!

My fiction recommendation for September 2011 is 01-01-00
by R.J. Pineiro.
This book talks about January 1st, 2000, so it's outdated, but interesting nonetheless. The story revolves around Susan Garnett, chief of the FBI's high-tech crimes unit and a strange computer virus that freezes computers all around the world. Add some Mayan history, international terrorists and extra-terrestrial life and you've got a plot line.
The author obviously did a lot of research, and he went overboard with his C++ details that go on and on and on ... and on. Similarly, he included too many details about Mayan culture and he kept repeating his technical knowledge (in case readers didn't read these sections the first time around?)
Why am I recommending this book? I've skipped some of the overly detailed paragraphs and really enjoyed the surprising end. I think the author did a fantastic job in turning a silly computer programming mistake (the Y2K glitch) into an original novel.

My non-fiction book for September 2011 is Hard Goals : The Secret to Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be by Mark Murphy.
You may have heard of the "SMART" acronym when it comes to setting goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Framed). The author explains why SMART goals don't work and why you should set HARD goals (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult). I must say that, after reading his book, I am convinced he's right!
The author takes 168 pages to explain HARD goals in an easy-to-understand manner and he backs it up with plenty of scientific studies, but here is my summary of HARD goals:
I recommend that you first read the entire book at once and focus on this new approach and thoroughly read the scientific evidence provided by the author. You'll be amazed! Then, sit down with a pad of paper and read the book again slowly while setting your HARD goals. Many examples are provided to help you understand how you can improve your goals and finally achieve them!
