This month's fiction book of the month recommendation is a great fantasy novel written by a local Calgary author. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan or if you enjoy escaping into a world filled with elves and adventures, you'll love it.
You'll also see a book suggestion for those who may be interested in learning more about dynamic website development with PHP and MySQL. Whether you agree or disagree with my reviews, I'd love to hear what you think. You can use the book review form below to send me your comments.
My fiction recommendation for May 2010 is The Stones of Moya: Stone I Destiny Shall Lead You by Marnie R. Mercier.
Calling all fantasy fans! You will absolutely love this first book by Marnie R Mercier. The Stones of Moya is a trilogy and only the first part is currently available. From what I heard at the book release party, the second book is getting ready to be published, and I can't wait to read it!
What is it about? Well, of course you have your mix of mankind, elves, trolls and other fantastic species but the whole story revolves around Arianna, a young woman raised in a small village amongst commoners but who later discovers she is of royal blood.
Through various events, she builds her strength and discover what she is capable of. But will she be ready for what lies ahead? Will she be capable of restoring balance to the realm and annihilate the evil magical powers at play?
My non-fiction book for May 2010 is PHP and MySQL Web Development (4th Edition) by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson.
OK, this book isn't light-reading per se, with 968 pages, and no, I didn't read it from cover to cover. But if, like me, you want to learn to create dynamic websites, this is a definite must-have. The book is filled with real-life examples that you can use. They are even included on a CD that comes with the book.
Although this subject can be quite dry, the authors did a wonderful job at keeping you interested and explaining things clearly. I particularly liked the e-commerce and security section, which answered many of my questions about online shopping carts.
The book is well structured so you can easily find what you are looking for without having to read the entire book. It has definitely become a great reference book for me!
