Relaxation-at-Home newsletter, Issue #021 -- Stay healthy and relax at home
March 11, 2009
Hi

In you live in Canada or in the northern part of the United States, you're probably looking forward to spring. A few more days and the snow will be gone (or at least start to melt...)

Unfortunately, spring is also associated with colds and flu and if you're not suffering from one right now, you probably know somehow who is.

To help you stay healthy and relax at home, I thought I would give you some homemade cough recipes that taste good as well as some comfort food suggestions that will help you feel better.

Dealing with a Cold

You could spend a fortune on cold and flu remedies at your local drugstore but most have been proven ineffective in reducing the duration of your cold. I guess the important feature of these remedies is that they make you FEEL better, which is important too!

Fortunately, homemade remedies can also make you feel better and you won't have to spend a fortune as most of these ingredients are readily available in your kitchen:
  • A bowl of chicken soup: if you're interested, you can find a homemade recipe here as well as a list of store-bought chicken soups sorted in order of effectiveness against a cold. To summarize it, the top three soups were:

    • Knorr's Chicken Flavor Chicken Noodle
    • Campbell's Home Cookin' Chicken Vegetable
    • Campbell's Healthy Request Chicken Noodle

  • Asian cough remedy: put 5 cloves into a cup of honey (250 ml), mix it and leave it in the fridge overnight. The next morning, remove the cloves and eat a teaspoon of "flavoured" honey, which will help soothe your throat.

  • Get rid of phlegm: chop up 6 onions finely and put them in a double-boiler with 1 cup of honey (don't forget to put water in the bottom). Cover and let it simmer for about 2 hours. Strain the mixture and keep it in a jar. The pungency of the onions will help clear out phlegm and you can take 15 ml (1 tablespoon) every few hours.

Comfort Food

Of course, comfort food makes you feel better when you're sick but you may not be able to enjoy the full flavour of what you eat!
